Overview

This session provides an overview of self-determination and its critical role in supporting positive academic and post-school outcomes for youth with disabilities. Participants will learn what self-determination is, why it matters, and how it can be reliably measured using validated tools. The presentation will also highlight an evidence-based practice for promoting self-determination and practical strategies educators can use to build students’ associated skills, such as choice-making, goal setting, self-advocacy, and decision-making. Attendees will leave with actionable approaches for promoting self-determination across classroom instruction, IEP development, and transition planning.
